A 42-year-old ‘prophet’ under the Zviratidzo Zvevapositori Apostolic Sect was caught on the wrong side of the law and was jailed four months for robbery.

James Muringisi appeared before Murambinda Magistrate, Mr Poterai Gwezhira facing robbery charges as defined in Section 126 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

Mr Gwezhira suspended a month from Muringisi’s sentence on condition that he restitutes Jealous Tsamwai’s US$260.

Mr Kudakwashe Chirairo prosecuted.

The court heard that sometime in November 2023, Muringisi of Zvomuya Village, Chief Nyashanu in Buhera approached Tsamwai at Zivhu Business Centre in Buhera as he drove his donkeys home.

Muringisi, who is not a police officer, asked Tsamwai to produce a police clearance and veterinary permit for his donkeys, but the latter failed to do so.

“Muringisi handcuffed Tsamwai and demanded US$2 from him. Tsamwai gave him the money. Muringisi took the complainant behind the shops and assaulted him several times with a baton stick on his thighs and under his feet.

“The accused person demanded US$260 from Tsamwai. Tsamwai gave him the money. Muringisi also took the complainant’s cellphone. Nothing was recovered,” said Mr Chirairo.

A report was made to the police, leading to Muringisi’s arrest.
