A PUBLIC prosecutor, Pardon Dziva has been sentenced to an effective eight-year jail sentence for fraud after he and his accomplice demanded US$ 20,000 to facilitate a lighter sentence for the Zimbabwe Miners Federation president Henrietta Rushwaya who had been convicted for smuggling.
Dziva and Alex Tombe appeared before a HararehigCourt Judge facing a charge of fraud. They were convicted and sentenced recently. Dziva was sentenced to 10 years and two years of the sentence was suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
Tombe was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment and two years of his sentence was suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. He will serve an effective six-year jail sentence.
The court heard that on 15 November 2023, Dziva demanded US$20 000 from Wellington Takavarasha to facilitate a lighter sentence for Rushwaya who had been convicted for smuggling by a Harare High Court Judge.
Takavarasha told Rushwaya’s sister, Helliate Rushwaya of Dziva’s demand. Helliate reported the matter to the Zimbabwe Republic Police Anti-Corruption Unit who set a trap for Dziva.
Helliate agreed to meet the duo at CABS Centre and was approached by Tombe who indicated that he had been sent to collect the money by Dziva. She refused to hand over the money and insisted on handing it over to Dziva. They drove to Kebbab Restaurant in Milton Park where they met the culprit. Dziva proceeded to Helliate’s motor vehicle where she handed over the trap money before the duo was subsequently arrested.
