Protester dies in Uganda riot

Ugandan police against demonstrators protesting rising fuel and food prices, a medical source said.
“A young man died after being taken to the clinic due to an overdose of tear gas,” Uganda Red Cross chief Richard Nataka said.
The victim was already ill prior to the incident, but the tear gas worsened his pre-existing condition and caused him to suffocate, Nataka explained.
The young man, whose identity was not immediately clear, was the first protestor to die in Kampala since demonstrations started a week ago.
The Red Cross said there were reports of two dead in Thursday’s clashes in the northern town of Gulu, but was not able to confirm the report.
Nataka added that at least other people were wounded in Monday’s clashes, which took place as police tried to prevent a “walk to work” protest led by opposition officials in several parts of the capital.
At least 17 senior opposition leaders were detained, including President Yoweri Museveni’s top three challengers in the February elections that saw him re-elected for another term after 25 years in power. – AFP.
