Provincial karate tourney hailed as success

ZIMBABWE Karate Union held a provincial tournament at Drill Hall on Saturday. The tournament had participants drawn from the country’s 10 provinces.Karatekas competed in the individual kumite category which is sparring as well as kata which is a form of movement done individually or as a team.

Golden Masiwa a third dan black belt holder from the Midlands came first and was followed by Branco Manyathela from Bulawayo.
Midlands also dominated in the team kumite event with Matabeleland A and B coming second and third respectively.

The main attraction was the match between much travelled Sebenzile Samatha Sibanda against Tsholotsho’s Gugulethu Ncube.
Bulawayo’s most promising karateka, Sibanda won the match.

In an interview after the match Tsholotsho’s Ncube said she was pleased with her performance.
“I’m happy about my performance because it’s my first time to be in a national competition and what makes me happy is that we have put Tsholotsho on the map,” she said.

The ZKU national coach Paul Danisa said he was pleased by the spirit of sportsmanship that prevailed during the tournament.
“I would like to congratulate Bulawayo for successfully hosting the event and the provinces for showing high levels of sportsmanship,” said Danisa.
