AFTER the Match Day 12 fixtures that were played last weekend, the 2019 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season which takes a three-week break to pave way for the Africa Cup of Nations action, has reached the 216-goal mark.
During the 2018 season, a total of 611 goals were scored, a decline from the 620 goals scored in 2017.
The development means the current season is 395 goals shy of last year’s total goal mark where former FC Platinum midfielder Rodwell Chinyengetere, who led the platinum miners to their second back- to-back league title, scooped the 2018 Golden Boot gong with 17 goals under his belt.
Prior to last weekend’s games, 200 goals had been scored meaning Week 12 action produced 16 goals where they were four goalless draws (Triangle 0 Chicken Inn 0, Black Rhinos 0 ZPC Kariba 0, Mushowani 0 Hwange 0, Manica Diamonds 0 Ngezi Platinum Stars 0).
The only goal scoring draw of Week 12 was a six-goal thriller between CAPS United and TelOne who played to a three-all draw in a weekend that produced one home win (Highlanders 1 Dynamos 0) and three home defeats (Harare City 1 Herentals 2, Bulawayo Chiefs 0 FC Platinum 3, Chapungu 1 Yadah 2).
While last season we reported that the 100th goal was scored by ex-Highlanders forward Gabriel Nyoni and Vengere Stadium in Rusape witnessed the 200th goal of the 2018 season from Blessing Maunganidze as Herentals equalised from the penalty spot in a match they played against then Premier League side Mutare City Rovers, according to mysports.co.zw this time around it was Bulawayo Chiefs player Hussein Zvavakapano who scored from the spot what turned out to be the 200th goal of the current PSL season.
The goal not only gave Chiefs the three points but only their second win of the season.
“It’s every player’s wish to score for his club and I’m happy that I have been doing so for my team. It’s said that we have lost quite number of games but we will not give up,” said Zvavakapano.
Twenty five of the 216 goals scored so far have come from the penalty spot in a season where local football enthusiasts have witnessed two hat-tricks from Ishmael Wadi and Clive Augusto of Harare City and Chicken Inn respectively.
There have been three own goals so far in the 2019 season, a campaign that has went on to have 14 braces from 12 players with Augusto and Evans Katema on two braces while Ngandu Mangala, Brighton Mungoni, Ian Nyoni, Johaness Sibanda, Wellington Taderera, Brett Amidu, Joel Ngodzo, Donald Teguru, Phelius Sibanda and Moses Demera are on single braces.
Augusto is the top goal scorer with 11 goals from 11 matches in a campaign that has seen 10 red cards being dished out so far. ZPC Kariba’s was reportedly the first player to see red when they played against Chicken Inn on the first day of the season.
The other red cards have gone to McClive Phiri (Highlanders), Edward Sadomba and Godfrey Mukambi both Dynamos, Piniel Gumbo (Chapungu), Frankson Bushiri (TelOne) Jerry Chipangura (Harare City) and Collen Kwaramba of Chapungu.
ZPC Kariba left back Munyaradzi Kunyarimwe is already on two red cards.
