PSL cracks whip

IT appears Harare giants Dynamos do not learn much from past mistakes and their forgetfulness is likely to hurt their pocket the most this season as they are leading the list of clubs that have been fined by the Premier Soccer League for various offences since the start of the campaign.

DeMbare, who are expected to be charged today for violence that erupted at Rufaro last Sunday when they lost 0-1 to FC Platinum, have so far accumulated more than $4 000 in fines accrued from acts of hooliganism by their supporters in the opening five games of the year.

According to a circular released by PSL yesterday, eight clubs have been fined to date for various offences under the league’s standing rules.

The former champions headline the list of offenders after they were fined $2 000 for missile throwing by their fans when the team lost 0-3 to reigning champions Chicken Inn at Barbourfields in the season opener on April 2.

The supporters were at it again during the Harare Derby against eternal rivals CAPS United two weeks ago.

The Glamour Boys lost the match 1-0 and that was their first league defeat to the Green Machine in seven years.

Their reacted angrily in the 79th minute by raining objects towards CAPS United midfielder Joel Ngodzo after he had gone down under a challenge from Ocean Mushure.

They repeated the violent acts in added time when CAPS United goalkeeper Jorum Muchambo had gone down and called for medical attention.

The DeMbare supporters perceived that as time wasting and in a rage threw missiles towards the keeper’s goal.

The offence earned them another $2 000 fine and an extra $125 for the expulsion of then coach Paulo Jorge Silva who was ejected from the bench towards the end of the match for continuous remonstration with the fourth official.

Dynamos Harare Metropolitan Supporters Association yesterday lamented the actions by sections of the club’s supporters.

The association’s treasurer Graham Mafoko yesterday urged supporters to desist from hooliganism.

“It would appear there are some people with a hidden agenda against the club because real Dynamos supporters would not do that; turning your backs against the club and attacking the team bus.

“From our understanding supporting football is about pleasure. It’s social entertainment that should be enjoyable and whenever there is a problem there are always ways to resolve that without resorting to violence because this is costing the club.

“Right now we are all crying that we want strikers but that money which should be used to sign players could be going towards fines and repairs to damaged property,” said Mafoko.

He also said the Dynamos Harare Metropolitan Supporters Association is available to assist the police in their investigations for the violence that rocked Rufaro last Sunday.

Their rivals CAPS United were fined $2 000 after their supporters threw objects onto the pitch celebrating Dominic Chungwa’s 70th minute goal in the 1-0 win over Dynamos.

Highlanders were also penalised $2 000 after their supporters threw missiles at the end of their match against FC Platinum.

Newboys Mutare City Rovers feature on the schedule of fines after they were made to pay $2 000 for pitch invasion by one of their supporters, Cecilia Gambe, who is also an executive committee member in the ZIFA Women’s Football.

Fellow debutantes Bulawayo City have been fined a total $1 000 for two different offences during the matches against Chicken Inn and Chapungu.

Teams that have also been fined include Harare City, Border Strikers and Chicken Inn.
