AFTER enduring probably their WORST year, in terms of fan attendance in its history, the domestic Premier Soccer League appear to be fighting back.
It might still be too early to make a judgment but the initial signs are promising and, in the first two weeks of the campaign, there has been a marked increase in attendance figures.
And, one can only wonder what would have been the case if teams like newboys, Simba Bhora, were allowed to play at their Wadzanai home ground in Shamva, where they command a huge following.
It has helped that the Big Three – Dynamos, Highlanders and CAPS United – who command the biggest constituency of fans in the league, have started on a good note.
They are all unbeaten, in the six matches they have played, with the Glamour Boys winning two out of two.
Makepekepe and Bosso have picked four out of a possible six points after a win, and a draw, in their first two matches.
“Even the roadshows are back and it was nice in Harare on Sunday to see some of our fans marching and driving around the CBD in our team’s colours and rallying others to go and watch their match against Sheasham,” said DeMbare fan, Malcolm “MM” Magwizi.
“As Charles Mabika always says the fans are the number one factor when it comes to football because, as we saw during the Covid-19 restrictions, without supporters, the game lacks its soul.
“There will be a response from the Bosso guys this weekend, with their team playing the champions FC Platinum, and I am so sure there will be a full house at Barbourfields for this big showdown.”
If both DeMbare and Makepekepe keep their good start going, their Week 7 Harare Derby showdown, set for Rufaro, could break records, in terms of attendance figures, in the Castle Lager Premiership, in recent years.
