THE Premier Soccer League will make way for the Independence Cup final by not having any league matches on the day of the final. This year’s final will be on a Saturday while the semi-finals are not likely to affect the league in any way as they have been set for April 15, which is midweek.
Premier Soccer League chief executive officer Kennedy Ndebele confirmed that the league will pave way for the final that has been set for the giant National Sports Stadium, venue for the main Independence Day celebrations where President Mugabe is expected to give a keynote address.
The third place play off will likely be held at the newly refurbished White City Stadium in Bulawayo. “We’ll not have league matches when there is a cup game, so yes, the Independence Cup final will not clash with our league matches,” said Ndebele.
Four teams that finished in the top four of the Castle Lager Premiership table last season will take part in this year’s Uhuru Cup.
Reigning league champions Dynamos will face runners up ZPC Kariba at Rufaro Stadium while holders of the Independence Cup, FC Platinum, fourth place finishers last season will square off against Caps United at Mandava Stadium in Zvishavane.
According to the supreme sports body in the country, the Sport and Recreation Commission, consultations for the prize money are going on between the Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture and treasury with the announcement expected soon.
This year’s Independence Cup will be the 35th edition.
