MEMBERS of the public have been urged to verify information before sharing it, particularly on social media, amid growing concerns over the spread of misinformation and disinformation.
Speaking during Zimbabwe’s commemorations of the International Day for Universal Access to Information in Garahwa, Chipinge district, Manicaland province, on Thursday, Deputy Minister of Information, Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Dingumuzi Phuti said unverified information could undermine public trust, fuel panic and damage reputations.
He urged citizens to rely on credible sources and practise responsible digital citizenship to help build an informed and resilient society.
“We live in an age where information travels at unprecedented speed through digital networks, satellite broadcasts, and mobile technology. While this digital expansion offers immense opportunities, it also exposes our societies to the dangers of information disorder — manifested through misinformation, disinformation, malinformation, and unverified rumours.
“Left unchecked, information disorder erodes social cohesion, creates panic during public health or climate emergencies, and destabilises community development efforts.
“Addressing information disorder requires us to uphold information integrity. Information integrity means ensuring that the news, data, and knowledge received by the public are accurate, reliable, contextually authentic, and ethically sourced.
“In an era where digital channels are often flooded with sensationalised or misleading content, trusted local information ecosystems serve as the first line of defence for our citizens,” said Deputy Minister Phuti.
He said the rapid expansion of digital platforms had created opportunities for citizens to access and share information, but had also increased the risk of false or misleading content spreading rapidly.
Phuti called for greater public awareness and responsible use of digital platforms to ensure that information contributes to, rather than undermines, community development.
