POLICE have warned the public against the use of firecrackers when celebrating the New Year saying those caught doing so would be arrested.In a statement, Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula said the use of firecrackers is prohibited as some people have been injured in previous years due to the use of the firecrackers.
She said police on patrol would arrest all those found in possession of firecrackers and the public should also assist in advising their children against their use.
“While we are not against people celebrating the advent of the New Year, we urge members of the public to celebrate responsibly without committing crime. We will also be on the lookout for those bent on disturbing peace during the festive celebrations and we are against the use of firecrackers,” said Insp Mazula.
She said there are a number of incidents where children were seriously injured while using firecrackers and it was the duty of both the police and parents to guard against their use.
Insp Mazula said the use of firecrackers causes unnecessary panic among residents and even security personnel.
“While we are not against people merrymaking and celebrating the coming of the New Year, we should be seen advising the public against the use of dangerous things. The firecrackers can spoil children and even adults’ happiness,” she said.
Insp Mazula also warned would-be criminals not to take advantage of the festive mood to commit crime.
“No-one should take advantage of the excitement and celebrations that residents may have to commit crime. Criminals should be warned that police will be on patrol at all times. On our roads, traffic police assisted by personnel from Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) will be manning our national roads to curb carnages.
“We also advise motorists and travellers to cooperate with our officers,” she said.
