PUMULA High School won the right to represent Bulawayo at the National Association of Secondary Heads Under-20 football tournament finals to be held at Hippo Valley High School on 6 October after a 3-2 on penalties victory over Mncumbatha at Gifford last Friday.

Proton Bakery and Surrey Group are the sponsors of the tournament. Twelve schools took part in the provincial finals with pre-tournament favourites Mpopoma, Mzilikazi and defending champions Gifford High failed to make the cut. Mpopoma fell in the group stages with Gifford and Mzilikazi bowing out at the quarter-final and semi-final stages respectively.

The Pumula High skipper Ayanda Ncube said he was delighted that his team managed to win the contest because they were faced with seasoned opponents in the competition.

The Nash head in charge of football in Bulawayo, John Nzima commended Pumula on their spirited performance and urged the team to bring the trophy home from the national games.

“Pumula High played very well and I urge the winning team to bring the trophy home. All the teams that participated in the tournament gained valuable lessons that they will use to conquer in next year’s competitions,” he said.-@ j_sihwa
