FORMER Liverpool midfielders Graeme Souness and Danny Murphy believe Cherries can use their result against Newcastle United as a catalyst in their quest for survival.
Marcos Senesi’s goal ultimately earned a 1-1 draw with Eddie Howe’s high-flying Magpies at Vitality Stadium, with Miguel Almiron cancelling out his opening goal.
It was just the second time in nine games since the World Cup break Cherries have not been beaten, with many feeling their performance on Saturday was worthy of more than just a point.
Cherries stay 19th in the Premier League table, with 18 points from their 22 matches.
Speaking in his role as pundit on Sky Sports, Souness, who lives on the south coast, said: “For Bournemouth, you have to start somewhere.
“They have put a really good performance in. In people’s eyes they maybe should have got the three points, but they didn’t. And they can take confidence from that.
“As a manager, you’re talking your team up all the time. If they keep getting beat and you keep talking them up, they won’t believe you for very long.
“I think (Saturday) is the starting point for Bournemouth. If they can maintain that level of energy and aggression, they’ve got a chance.”
The Scot added: “But, ultimately, it comes back to what happens in either box.
“They are conceding too many goals and they’re not scoring enough.
“What happens between them, you can be pretty, you can be attractive, you can do what you want there. Ultimately, it’s what you do in both boxes.”
Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, Murphy added: “Improvement from Bournemouth.
“They did alright. It is something to build on for them.”
Newcastle legend Alan Shearer added how Cherries “deserved” to pick up a point.
