AN O-Level pupil who drove without a licence before crashing and killing one of his passengers has escaped with a $200 fine.
Mr Michael Tawanda Hove (20), of Blackwaters in Shangani, yesterday pleaded guilty to driving without a licence and culpable homicide before Gwanda magistrate Ms Sheila Nazombe.
The magistrate fined him $200 or alternatively 60 days in prison. Hove was further sentenced to six months imprisonment, which was wholly suspended on condition that he performs 210 hours of community service at Shangani Primary School starting on Monday next week.
He must complete the community service within a period of six weeks, the magistrate ordered.
Getrude Zvidzai, prosecuting, told how on 5 October this year, at about 2.50pm, Hove was driving a Nissan Cabster truck along a strip road towards Shangani Mine with four passengers on board.
He lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the road and overturned.
A passenger who was at the back of the truck was trapped to death while the others sustained minor injuries and were treated and discharged at Shangani Hospital.
