A vacation study at Nyashanu Mission High School in Buhera ended in tragedy when a pupil shot dead a colleague after accidentally discharging a loaded and cocked pistol smuggled into the class by another boy. The incident occurred last Friday at around 4pm and the 17-year-old suspect is assisting police with investigations.
The pupils were on vacation study, which is conducted for two weeks for exam classes to equip them with techniques, skills and knowledge to attain better grades.
Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda confirmed the incident, saying the CZ pistol in question belonged to Mr Daniel Jeche (57) who heads the Reformed Church of Zimbabwe-owned boarding school.
“I can confirm the shooting incident at Nyashanu Mission High School involving Form Four pupils, Tatenda Mudiwa (victim) and (the suspect),” said Asst Insp Chananda.
Asst Insp Chananda said Mudiwa was accidentally shot by the CZ pistol which had been smuggled into the classroom by a third 17 year old.
The boy with the pistol went into the classroom with it hidden in his trousers pocket, he said. Mudiwa and the other two began scrutinising its settings and it was during that process that the suspect accidentally pulled the trigger and shot Mudiwa.
“The gun was loaded with one round of ammunition and cocked.”
Mr Jeche made a report at Murambinda Police Station.
The bullet pierced through the upper left ear and lodged into Mudiwa’s head.
The injured boy was rushed to Murambinda Mission Hospital and later transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare where he died on Sunday.
