OVER 100 Grade Seven pupils from Chirowakamwe Primary School in Mutare on Friday cleaned Zororai Old People’s Home and Nzeve Deaf Centre, as part of this month’s clean-up campaign.

The pupils conducted the clean-up as part of their curriculum under Social Services and Voluntary Organisation.

They also entertained the elderly and donated clothes and fruits to the 15 inmates.

In an interview with The Herald, the school’s deputy headmaster, Mr Itayi Mushonga, hailed the pupils for participating in the clean-up exercise outside of the school’s premises.

“We organised this clean-up as a school in honour of the National Clean-up Campaign which was launched by President Mnangagwa. It encourages us to take care of our environment through cleaning. We thought of coming to Zororai Old People’s Home and Nzeve Deaf Centre to clean and socialise with the vulnerable in our community. It is also a good thing to focus on cleaning up other areas and not only focusing on our school,” he said.

Mr Caston Chikumbirike, a Grade Seven teacher, said: “In our curriculum we have a topic that teaches children about taking care of the vulnerable.

“This clean-up exercise is also part of the practical work that we teach our pupils in the Social Services and Voluntary Organisations subject. It helps them to learn better by practising and also helps them become responsibly citizens by honouring the National Clean-up Day.”

The pupils also shelled 300kg of maize produce that was harvested at the old people’s home.

Laina Temaromoyo, a Grade Seven pupil, said she was happy to participate in the clean-up exercise as everyone needs  help.

“I am happy to help in this clean-up campaign because in life we should help each other and do good to each other. We want to make these people feel good about themselves,” she said.

Zororai Old People’s home administrator Mr Gondai Gondo appreciated the work done by the pupils.
