FIFTY-TWO pupils from Bulawayo’s Mzilikazi High School yesterday completed a week long internship programme, designed to equip them with career choices at Mpilo Central Hospital. The pupils who started work related learning on Monday will be awarded certificates for participation said hospital officials.
Hospital staff who were supervising the pupils said the programme was well received by the pupils who were eager to learn.
“We have been teaching the children on ways to conduct themselves when in an adult working environment.
“Through our supervision the children managed to fix some of the broken equipment,” said Vulindlela Dube the acting hospital equipment technician.
A sister in charge of one of the hospital’s wards, Chioneso Marunga, said they taught the pupils how to handle patients who were suffering from various diseases.
“We taught them about the basic nursing attributes and how to deal with patients suffering from chronic and infectious diseases. They showed interest in taking up nursing as a career with some of them inquiring about its remunerations and basic entry qualifications,” said Sister Marunga.
Pupils who spoke to Chronicle said the programme was an eye opener for them.
“We now know what is done by the different professionals at hospital,” said Kelly Tembo.
Other pupils said it was interesting working in a hospital as they now appreciated the difficult work done by health workers.
The pupils were attached in 10 departments including purchase and supply, pharmacy, human resources, finance, laboratory, radiography, nutrition, hospital instrument maintenance and physiotherapy.
The internship programme is a joint initiative between the hospital and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education meant to promote hands-on education.
