SIX pupils were injured while lessons were temporarily brought to a halt at Chironde Primary School in Shurugwi on Thursday last week when a windstorm blew off roofs of two classroom blocks.
The six were injured when some of the blown roofing material fell into the classrooms where they were learning, officials said.
Acting Midlands provincial education director Reverend Tedious Mativenga confirmed the incident.
“I can confirm that the roof of Chironde School in Shurugwi was blown off by strong winds on Thursday. The report that I have shows that there were school pupils that were injured in the process.
“However, I am happy that the pupils were rushed to a nearby health facility where they were treated and discharged.
“We have sent a team led by Shurugwi District Schools Inspector to go on the ground so that they can give us a comprehensive report,” he said.
Shurugwi North Member of Parliament Cde Robson Nyathi said the community was working together with the school to see how best they could assist.
“It’s unfortunate and we have also sent our people on the ground to try and assist the school. We heard that some of the pupils were injured,” he said.
Two weeks ago, more than 10 families were left homeless when their homes were destroyed by another windstorm in Shurugwi.
According to the affected families, the storm ripped through Shurugwi two weeks ago and destroyed several homesteads.
