RURAL district councils this week took the first steps towards the merger with urban councils by electing a new executive in Bulawayo to spearhead the initiative.
The congress of the Association of Rural District Council in Zimbabwe (ARDCZ) on Thursday tasked the new committee to work out modalities of merging with the Urban Councils Association of Zimbabwe (UCAZ).
Addressing the congress, ARDCZ secretary-general Rodgers Mozhentiy said the merger of the two organisations will see all local authorities speaking with one voice.
“When we go to international conferences we have two organisations representing the country. This is not ideal. We must be one organisation because we have the same interests of among other things, improving service delivery,” said Mozhentiy.
The ARDCZ president David Guy Mutasa said the merger was one of his organisation’s priorities this year.
“As councils we must push the ZimAsset agenda as a single organisation,” said Mutasa.
In an interview, UCAZ acting secretary-general Tserayi Machida said members of his organisation were meeting next month to discuss the proposed merger.
“We have provisionally set a meeting on May 9 in Victoria Falls where members will deliberate on the merger,” said Machida.
