Insimbi ZeZhwane’s renowned dancer and live show favourite, Putsununu, has officially parted ways with the band.

He is joining forces with Witness “Mawie” Phiri, brother to the group’s late lead vocalist Elvis “MaEli” Mathe, to form a new group, iZhwane Elincane Express Band.

The formation of this new band, as well as Putsununu’s departure from Insimbi ZeZhwane, has received the blessing of Meluleki “Brema” Moyo, who now leads Insimbi ZeZhwane.

The duo’s upcoming single, “Udubo Seluphelile”, has already generated significant buzz on social media, thanks to a promotional teaser shared online. The single is set to be released on September 20.

While some fans have expressed support for the duo’s new venture, others remain skeptical about the move.

In an interview, Mawie who revealed that he had always  had a passion for singing, said Brema supported them in the recording of their debut single.

“Brema played the bass guitar for the track that we’re finalising. It’s the one that will introduce iZhwane Elincane Express Band to the people,” Mawie said.

“Rhumba fans should wait for September 20 and judge us once they’ve heard the full song.”

He added that following the single’s release, they plan to launch a full album before the end of the year.

Mawie, who is also involved in mining and serves as a prophet within the Zion church, shared that many of his songs come to him in dreams.

“The name iZhwane Elincane Express Band came about after a discussion with Brema. I’m a fan of Insimbi ZeZhwane, where my brother MaEli sang, and this project is a way to heal the wound of losing him.

“We’re in the process of setting up a full team to prepare for live shows,” said the 24-year-old.

He highlighted his ability to balance his three roles – musician, miner, and prophet – without any challenges, citing his dedication to each.

Brema expressed his full support for the new band and pledged to assist them whenever needed.

“Mawie and Putsununu are like my boys, and they have my full support in what they’ve started.

“When a child grows up, they start their own family, and that’s what Putsununu has done.

“I won’t stand in the way of any of my boys if they choose to chart their own path away from Insimbi ZeZhwane,” said Brema.

He also noted that Putsununu left on good terms and will always remain family, given their long history together. – @themkhust
