Qobho eyes Top Goal Scorer Award

BANTU Rovers striker Lenience “Qobho” Mpofu is confident of walking away with the Zifa Southern Region Division One’s top goal scorer’s award as he leads the pack with eight goals.
Going into yesterday’s matches, Mpofu had a two goal advantage over five other players in the league who are all at par on six goals each. Qobho, who scooped the top goal scorer’s award when he was with Railstars after netting 24 goals, said he was ready to repeat the feat. He said his aim is to end the season with 12 goals. Bantu were yesterday scheduled to face Black Boots and their last match is against ZPC Hwange.

“I think I can do it because I have done it before so it is within my reach. It is unfortunate I was injured at the beginning of the season because I think I would have scored more than eight goals but I want to score four more in the two remaining matches,” said the former Highlanders and Chicken Inn goal poacher.

Players with six goals each include James Chivasa (Ntabazinduna), Bekithemba Nyoni (Technosphere), Nyasha Manzunzu (Casmyn), Courage Sibanda (Hwange Juniors) and Kundishora Chakanyuka of Bulawayo Chiefs.
Nokel Security has been sponsoring the Southern Region Division monthly top goal scorer awards with several players taking home the prize money of $150 per award.

Zifa Southern Region board member Jabulani Chinyangarara revealed that because of the competition ignited by the monthly award, they were negotiating with the sponsors for the league’s overall top scorer to be rewarded at the end of the season.

“We are grateful to our partners Nokel Security for motivating players through this award. We’ve been seeing even midfielders competing strongly for the award and as a board, we are in the process of negotiating for an end of season top goal scorer’s package. We want to honour the players who’ve made this league exciting,” he was quoted saying.

Chairman Musa Mandaza said they are negotiating with sponsors for the funding of the top players’ awards following last year’s soccer stars that were funded by Machache Meats.

“There are people we are talking to but at the moment I cannot say we have come up with anything concrete but I am confident the soccer stars awards for the region will take place,” he said.

Last year, Edmore Chirambadare, then with Tsholotsho, scooped the regional Soccer Star of the Year Award and the Top Goal Scorer’s Award having scored 12 times, while Tsholotsho coach Lizwe Sweswe was named Coach of the Year.
