POLICE have arrested four people around Beitbridge as the crackdown on drug peddling and smuggling continues.
In a public notice, police confirmed the arrest of Temptation Guzhira by detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics at Bubi Roadblock in connection with unlawful possession of dagga and 289 bottles of Broncleer Cough Syrup.
“Similarly, a truck driver, Philip Gangata (53) was arrested at Beitbridge Border Post on June 16 for unlawful possession of 50 boxes X 100 mls Broncleer Cough Syrup.”
This comes as Brighton Bongiseni (36) and Pardon Mutsvairo (34) were arrested at northbound buses search bay, Beitbridge Border Post on June 15 for unlawful possession of 222 bottles of Broncleer Cough Syrup. The contraband was stashed in two X 20 litre containers,” said the police.
As the crackdown continues on smuggling of goods among them drugs and banned/prohibited substances, State warehouses managed by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) at the Beitbridge border post have of late been overflowing with intercepted goods.
The use of drones, commercial and baggage scanners, motorised patrols and the canine unit is reportedly bearing fruit for the Government.
Under the new order, authorities have been able to increase surveillance in all hotspot areas and minimise the loss of revenue that is critical in funding Government commitments.
