FOUR men, who were once employed by former First Lady Grace Mugabe at her Blue Roof residence in Harare, appeared in court yesterday charged with theft.
Allen Chinamonya, Danmore Chinamonya, Samson Karonga and Brighton Bunganirwa appeared before regional magistrate, Marewanazvo Gofa, who remanded them in custody to today for bail considerations.
The former First Lady is being represented by Kennedy Fero.
Chinamonya was formerly employed as a groundsman and later as a driver from 2004 to 2022.
Karonga is still employed as an electrician and Bunganirwa was once employed as a gardener.
He has a conviction for stealing a chest of drawers from the same residence.
The court heard that Grace Mugabe brought 11 storage containers to the residence, loaded with various household properties, which were moved from Zimbabwe House, after former President Mugabe’s retirement.
It is the State’s case that from 2018 to May this year, the quartet broke the locks of the containers and stole various household items.
On Wednesday last week, the former First Lady went to the containers to select items to donate to the African Liberation Museum and found out that some of the locks had been broken.
She opened the containers and discovered that various items were missing.
She advised Fero who reported the case to ZRP Borrowdale.
The police interviewed the suspects and recovered a suit and bed linen from Chinamonya’s residence as well as a television set.
The items were identified as the ones which had been stolen from the containers.
Tambudzai Musamvi appeared for the State.
