Queens crowned Super 40 champs

Queens Sports Club are the National Premier League (NPL) Women’s Super 40 champions after Tasmeen Granger’s half-century and a devastating five-wicket haul from captain Nomvelo Sibanda powered them to a 95-run victory over Takashinga Queens in the final at Kwekwe Sports Club on Saturday.

Batting first, Queens found themselves under pressure at 87 for five, with two of those wickets coming through run-outs.

Granger, however, turned the innings around with a composed 56 off 59 balls, combining with Thubelihle Saidi for a crucial 84-run sixth-wicket partnership.

Saidi contributed 29 as Queens recovered strongly to post a competitive 208 for nine.

Munenyasha Mandidzora was the pick of the Takashinga bowlers, finishing with three wickets for 53 runs. Takashinga’s chase was then rocked by a superb opening spell from Queens, which left them reeling at 10 for four inside three overs. Sibanda was at the heart of the early damage and went on to claim outstanding figures of five wickets for just 17 runs. Lorraine Pemhiwa fought valiantly with 64, but received little support, with the next-highest contribution being just 13.

Takashinga were eventually dismissed for 113 in 16.5 overs, sealing an emphatic 95-run victory and the NPL Women’s Super 40 title for Queens.

Brief Score:

Queens Sports Club — 208-9 in 40 overs (Tasmeen Granger 56, Loryn Phiri 31, Thubelihle Saidi 29; Munenyasha Mandidzora 3/53, Precious Marange 2/31, Michelle Mavunga 1/39)
