IN a landmark moment for women in Zimbabwe, 10 young female athletes will each receive a US$150 scholarship at the inaugural Queens with Wings Track and Field Meet set for July 5 at White City Stadium.
While modest in monetary value, the scholarships symbolise a major step forward in recognising and supporting the dual pursuit of academic and athletic excellence among young women.
This all-female athletics meet, organised by Queens with Wings, a United States-based team of women dedicated to hosting female-centred sporting events, is the first of its kind in the country.
The event not only offers a competitive platform exclusively for girls and women, but also places strong emphasis on empowerment through education.
“This is more than just a sporting event — it’s a platform to inspire, uplift, and create real change in the lives of these young women,” said Watson Madanyika, chairperson of the Bulawayo Athletics Board.
Queens with Wings has successfully hosted similar events in Ohio and Texas for the past three years.
Their mission is rooted in the core values of honour, excellence, giving, hospitality, and teamwork, all of which will be on full display in Bulawayo as they extend their impact to Zimbabwe.
“The inclusion of scholarships is a game-changer. It shows that sport can be a vehicle not only for athletic excellence but for educational advancement as well.
“We are proud to be part of an initiative that opens doors for our athletes both on and off the track. Even though the scholarship amount may seem small, the impact is far greater.
“It sends a message that these young women matter, that their dreams are valid, and that there are people across the globe who believe in their potential. That is priceless,” said Madanyika.
With a full slate of track and field events across age divisions and no entry fee for spectators, the Queens with Wings meet is expected to draw widespread attention.
The combination of high-level competition, international collaboration and educational support makes this event a transformative opportunity for female athletes in Zimbabwe and could set the tone for future generations.
