QUELATON stormed into the next round of the Machache Meats Football Tournament when they dismissed New West City in a dull match played at Portuguese Ground yesterday. Toto Banda scored the all-important goal for Quelaton in the 70th minute with a glancing header after being fed from the right flank by Patrick Mujuru.

The New West City defence should shoulder the blame for the goal as they were ball watching leaving Banda with the easiest of tasks of beating the goalkeeper Freedom Magaba all systems out.

The match was evenly balanced with both teams employing kick and run tactics which proved to be a big bore to the small crowd that braved the chilly weather.

Quelaton however, looked more threatening with Banda, Zibusiso Dambo, Moodley Njeleza and Mujuru giving the New West City defence anxious moments.

Dambo could have opened the scoring for Quelaton 30 minutes into the first half with a blistering shot from outside box but Magaba was equal to the task when he punched the ball back into play.

The teams went to the break deadlocked and with just a minute in the second half Banda tested Magaba with a low shot from the edge of the box which missed the target with a few inches.

From there it was a see-saw affair with players struggling to control the ball due to the wind.

Dambo’s glancing header in the 68th minute almost caught Magaba off guard but the ball went wide with the Quelaton bench up on their feet and ready to celebrate.
