THE clock is ticking and excitement is reaching fever pitch as preparations for the third edition of the Zimbabwe School of Mines Marathon gather momentum, with organisers urging athletes and fitness enthusiasts to secure their places before registration closes.
Set to attract hundreds of participants from across Zimbabwe and beyond, the annual event has rapidly grown into one of Bulawayo’s most anticipated sporting spectacles, bringing together elite athletes, recreational runners, corporate teams, students and families under one banner of health, endurance and community spirit.
With the starting gun drawing ever closer, organisers say this year’s edition promises to be bigger, more competitive and more inclusive than ever before.
Participants can choose from four race categories, the grueling 42km full marathon, the challenging 21km half marathon, the popular 10km race and the family-friendly 5km fun run. Inclusive categories have also been incorporated, ensuring that wheelchair athletes and other participants with special needs can take part in the prestigious event.
For a registration fee of just US$15, every participant will receive race entry, a race pack and a commemorative finisher’s medal, adding extra value to what organisers describe as a celebration of athletic excellence and community engagement.
The Zimbabwe School of Mines Marathon has steadily carved out a reputation as one of the country’s emerging sporting brands, with previous editions attracting runners from various provinces while providing a significant boost to Bulawayo’s sports tourism profile.
Organisers have challenged both seasoned athletes and first-time runners to embrace the occasion and become part of a growing legacy.
“This is more than just a race. It is an experience that brings together people from different backgrounds through sport.
“Whether you are chasing a personal best, competing for honours or simply running for fun and fitness, there is a category for everyone,” said a Bulawayo fitness enthusiast, Kelly Nkomo.
The marathon is also expected to provide a platform for local businesses, hospitality operators and vendors, with hundreds of visitors anticipated to descend on the city for the event.
Athletics enthusiasts in Bulawayo have welcomed the continued growth of the marathon, saying it has become an important fixture on the city’s sporting calendar.
“This event keeps getting bigger every year. It promotes healthy lifestyles while also showcasing Bulawayo as a sporting destination,” Nkomo added.
With entries continuing to pour in, organisers have issued a final rallying call to prospective participants: don’t remain a spectator when you can become part of the action.
As anticipation builds and training programmes intensify, one thing is certain: when the starting gun finally sounds at the third Zimbabwe School of Mines Marathon, Bulawayo will once again come alive to the rhythm of pounding feet, determination and sporting excellence.
