adminLONDON. — A match in the Spanish La Liga was stopped by the referee due to racist chants aimed at a visiting player at the weekend. Sporting Gijón’s game with Athletic Club was stopped after around half an hour when the home fans began to abuse Athletic’s young forward Iñaki Williams.
The 22-year-old is Spanish born from Liberian parents and became the first black player to score for the Basque-only club in 2014. When chants broke out at Sporting’s El Molinón ground, referee Clos Gomez halted proceedings as some of the home side’s players pleaded with fans to cease.
The Gijón club have previously been fined for racist and abusive chanting after a 2008 incident involving Getafe winger Joffre Guerrón, albeit a paltry €3000. — AFP.
