Railstars ready to defend title

The former National Railways of Zimbabwe sponsored club has managed to clinch a deal that will see them fulfilling all their matches.
Last week the NRZ cited financial constraints as the main reason behind their withdrawal of sponsorship to their football, netball and volleyball teams for the 2012 season.

Railstars netball team coach Janota Phiri yesterday said they were geared up for the season and his charges were raring to go.
Njanji had their season’s opening fixture against Mutare Prison postponed last weekend.
“As the technical team and players we are grateful to our executive committee that managed to get us sponsorship to ensure that we continue playing in the league.

We are working hard to make sure that we retain the championship. We know that we are going to be the team to beat but we are ready for that,” said Phiri.
Railstars have won the league title in the last two seasons and they want to make it three in a row.
Harare Prison’s Nehanda who beat Railstars to the 2009 title on goal difference pose a threat to the Bulawayo team this season.

Phiri said they would not under-rate any teams but singled out Zimbabwe Defence Forces and Mutare Prison as some of the title contenders.
For this season, Njanji will be without goalkeeper Priscilla Dube and wing defender Jerita Mushunye who were regulars in their team last year.
The two left the team during off-season and were replaced by Julie Sibanda of How Mine and Free Stars’ defender only identified as Thobekile.

Phiri managed to retain the bulk of his squad and will build his team around national team players Perpetua Sachitema, Pauline Jani and Daphney Agere.
The three players were part of Zimbabwe’s team that participated at last year’s Maputo All-Africa Games.

Railstars 2012 squad
