Watch: Rains give relief to Ngozi Mine fires

Raymond Jaravaza, Zimpapers Reporter

UNDERGROUND fires that besieged Richmond landfill, commonly known as “Ngozi Mine” in Bulawayo, are now, at least for this rainy season, a thing of the past, according to residents at the settlement.

Commissioned in 1994 with a 20-year lifespan, the Richmond Landfill had become an environmental hazard due to frequent fires.

The fires, exacerbated by high summer temperatures, release thick clouds of smoke that affect the health and quality of life of nearby communities.

The rainy season says brought relief to the fires, residents and waste pickers who spoke to Zimpapers on Monday at the landfill said.

“The fires have subsided due to the rains. Last year, from August to November, we experienced underground fires almost every day, and it affected our business,” said a waste picker who asked to be identified only as Mxolisi.

This is a developing story……
