Rampant use of guns, machetes worries police

Police in Mashonaland West have expressed concern over the rampant use of dangerous weapons by robbers in the province.

The police are particularly worried about the use of machetes and guns.

This follows a case where a man from Chegutu — Tinashe Musarurwa of 23513 of Umvovo Township — lost $1 500, R4 000 and a cellphone to robbers.

In an interview, Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara said a group of robbers broke into Musarurwa’s house in the dead of the night.

He said the robbers, who were armed with an AK47 rifle, machetes and sjamboks, ordered Musarurwa to lie on the floor before demanding cash from him. Musarurwa’s wife reportedly handed over $1 500 and R4 000 to the robbers who demanded more money, saying they were aware that Musarurwa had US$3 000.
