A 67-year-old widower who broke into a 92-year-old woman’s bedroom hut and raped her once, has blamed evil spirits for his conduct.
Fabian Vange Sibanda from Tshange Village in Hwange told the court that he was influenced by evil spirits to rape the old woman. “I was drunk coming from a beer drink and I think as a person without a wife, evil spirits led me to her,” he said.
Hwange regional magistrate Dambudzo Malunga sentenced Sibanda to 10 years in prison for rape and two years for unlawful entry.
Prosecutor Tawanda Sigauke told how on July 12 last year around 2.30AM, Sibanda stormed into the elderly woman’s bedroom hut and grabbed her by the hand.
The woman struggled to free herself and at the same time screaming to draw the attention of her neighbours.
The sexually starved Sibanda who feared neighbours could come to the woman’s rescue went outside to check and when he was satisfied that no one heard the woman’s screams, he returned to the bedroom hut. The woman had by then hidden under the bed and the determined Sibanda fished her out, shoved her on the bed and raped her once before disappearing.
The elderly woman reported the rape to her neighbours who subsequently reported to the police leading to Sibanda’s arrest.
