Teens rule the world, ok! It is indisputable that upcoming dancehall artiste Regionald “Ras Pompy” Punch is already a massive force on the local dancehall scene.
At 13, the Mbare based singer and songwriter seems to be enjoying life in the fast lane. With two hit singles playing on the radio and big dawgs in the entertainment circles as personal friends, he has added an interesting mix to his plate. High School!
It has been over a month since we welcomed the New Year and the start of a new term. Ras Pompy on the other hand was saying hello to life in high school since he started his form one at Morgan High School.
Any other student would have switched into the panic mode from coping with more subjects, more teachers and other high school stuff but not the child star.
Everything is smooth sailing and he is fitting in just fine thanks to his celebrity status.
“Wow, high school is crazy and more fun than primary school. Yes most people know me and regard me as a celebrity at my new school. I have people I don’t know even calling me by name when I’m with the mafia (friends) during breaks. I have even had some teachers request for my CDs!” he said in an interview with Cool Lifestyle.
However, he is more excited about his plans for the near future that include an album release sometime this year. He has 15 songs that are yet to be recorded that will feature on his debut.
An opportunity to perform live for his schoolmates will also add icing to the cake as he is dying to show them what he is really made of.
“I am not really worried about the future because I need to make every second count especially now. I’m enjoying being in Form One and later this year, I will be releasing my first album.
“I’m also keen on performing at my school in upcoming talent shows,” he said.
So great is life in celebville that Ras Pompy does not have time for beef with competitors. Asked on his relationship with fellow artiste and nemesis Spider Man who is now called Mad Spider, he said:
“Him and I are cool. We actually have a song, Nzira Dzevakoma that we did together. Fans can compare us if they like but I do my own thing,” he said.
The singer who had impressive Grade Seven results enjoys English language, Maths and History.
Just like any other student he is already practising time management. His musical career, therefore is reserved for the weekends and holidays.
Like last weekend when he staged two shows where he wowed fans in the city centre. He is ready to do it again this weekend.
“It’s cool how promoters are now taking us seriously and I get paid well with each performance. It is no longer child’s play anymore,” he said.
Ras Pompy who is the last born in a family of two also says he gives all his money from shows to his mama. Ain’t that cute?
Besides music, people will also see more of him on the basketball court as he says he is a good player.
This is in spite of his pint size.
Meanwhile, a close friend and classmate Tapiwanashe Saranewako (14) who is also known as Deejay Taps gave an insight into how they are handling adolescent troubles.
“We are normal kids even though we are into dancehall.
“We have no intentions of indulging in mischief or drugs. As for girls, we are not into them although they are into us,” he said.
