The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has plans to install solar mini grid systems and biogas digesters at public institutions in rural areas which are far from the national grid network, an official said on Tuesday. REA board chairperson Willard Chiwewe said the agency was aiming to electrify all public institutions in rural areas by 2018.
“Funds permitting, we want to electrify all public institutions within 15km to 20 km from the existing grid network between 2015 and 2018,” he said.
“We want to ensure that electricity is extended to rural areas which have been neglected for a long time,” he added.
REA has made great strides in providing electricity grid infrastructure to rural areas since its inception in 2002.
It has electrified rural business centres, schools, clinics and chiefs homesteads.
Lack of electricity in rural areas has resulted in massive deforestation as communities use the trees as energy for cooking and lighting — New Ziana.
