AN international non-governmental organisation, PROMETRA, has called for the recognition of traditional medicine in the health sector.
Speaking during a recent function, aimed at celebrating the use of African traditional medicine in Harare, a PROMETRA member, Changamire Moyo, said it was imperative to include traditional medicine in the health system.
“Do we need to remind each other that there have always been healers among men?
“Traditional medicine is as old as humanity, as old as pain.
“This medicine, through encounters, attitudes and practices, has proven itself through the ages and has achieved feats never equalled to this day,” he said.
Moyo said western medication needs to work simultaneously with traditional medicine.
He said western medicine had limitations.“We are still waiting for decrees or laws to apply for a medicine that has proven itself through the ages.
“Everywhere, there is a renewed interest in ancient medicines, natural medicines and African medicines.
“This is why Western researchers are in our forests, in our villages, and at the feet of our healers, to be schooled. “But we continue to follow western medicine,” he said.
