For more than 300 years, Africans were subjected to brutal and racial slavery which saw the imperialists’ making brisk business through the unfortunate slave trade. Colonisation of Africa followed after the Berlin Conference in 1884. This saw Africans being oppressed and millions of them massacred.
In most cases, an apology is made after someone has terribly wronged another, and feels it from their heart that they are sorry then forgiveness will follow depending on the remorse shown to the victim by the offender. This might lead to the two parties reconciling and giving up their differences and coming up with a common understanding to their problem.
When most African nations attained their independence, they immediately found it necessary to adopt the principle of reconciliation. They did this wholeheartedly inorder to forget about the gross inhuman activities that were perpetrated on them by the colonial racist governments. They did this for the purposes of peace, stability and love of this African continent. They forgave in anticipation that everybody would have a common vision in the development of African nations and the world as a whole.
It is very clear that African leaders were taken for a ride. They forgave people who never apologised at all, people who were not sorry about the slave trade, the Berlin Conference, colonisation and many other atrocities during the colonial era. They did not realise that colonisation was not yet over.
We have seen a new form of colonisation unfolding in different forms. It has re-emerged with new strategies and tactics. The white governments still want to oppress Africans and squander Africa’s resources. In this regard I believe reconciliation was not necessary because it became a calculated move to calm and appease Africans inorder to make them forget about total independence and empowering the indigenous people.
Today we see some African leaders being honoured and respected worldwide, awarded with Nobel peace prizes so that they do not discuss too much about land redistribution and indigenisation leaving out illustrious and gallant sons of African freedom like Kwame Nkrumah, Patrice Lumumba, Samora Machel, Julius Nyerere, Robert Mugabe just but to mention a few. Are they not heroes?
Perhaps someone needs to ask those who give these prizes, even to war criminals like Barrack Obama the criteria they use in selecting whoever has won the Nobel prize.
It is very clear that Europeans and Americans do not respect Africans at all and will never regard them as equal beings. It is the same attitude that these white racist governments had during the slave trade that the likes of Tony Blair and George Bush have today and it is the same attitude that Cecil John Rhodes and the likes of King Leopold II had that the likes of David Cameroon, Barrack Obama, Angela Merkel and the now politically defunct Nicholas Sarkozy and Silvio Berlusconi have today. They refuse to change. Even though they were defeated, they will never surrender on Africa; they believe Africa is an extension of European and American states.
To thwart this, African leaders need to be stronger than before as imperialist movements have come up with new notable ideas like forming opposition parties and developing strong relationships with some puppets governments so as to effect regime change in some democratically-elected, strong and Pan-African governments.
The external interference of Europe and America in Africa is now clear and conspicuous particularly in Zimbabwe where it became most visible after the successful land reform programme. Africans must stop this nonsense, for instance, by coming up with stringent laws which restrict such external interference.
It is very unfortunate that some African leaders have allowed themselves to be puppets of the west. We have a good example in our country where a team member, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai who has a track record of scoring some spectacular own-goals against his team since the formation of his party in 1999.
He openly opposed the land reform programme in 2000. He went to Europe and America and pleaded for economic sanctions against his own country so as to push the general citizens of Zimbabwe against Zanu-PF. He and his western backers used to say sanctions were targeted but people of Zimbabwe are not foolish; they know very well what is black and white, they are very intelligent, educated and enlightened people. Sanctions were invited and they are evil because they brought about an economic melt down which has led to brain drain, destruction of infrastructure, and many more challenges that we can discuss the whole day.
I am not quite sure whether Mr Tsvangirai knew the negative impact that the illegal economic sanctions would have before he called for them. If he knew then he is the devil himself.
Some will say he knew that as he “prophesied” that. “Muri kuti muri kufa nenzara; muchashayisisa,” he once made a statement to this effect. If the Mr Tsvangirai was drunk and just trying to crack a joke, then someone needs to tell him that it was not funny joke.
Even within the inclusive government Mr Tsvangirai has continued to score serious and critical own goals by calling for the overthrow of the government of which he is part. Also, he has taken a swipe against revolutionary songs which assisted in inspiring the cadres during the liberation struggle. He also continues to snub their national gatherings, purporting them to be Zanu-PF.
It is also because of the continued external interference in Africa which has lead to the formation of coalition governments. The GPA in our country which has turned out to be an illegal government because it has lived and exceeded its legitimate life time has continued to exist because of its endless negotiations.
The GPA leaders are known to be always negotiating and negotiating even issues which have no significance in the development of the country. The constitution making process is now in a deadlock. Instead of drafters simply writing the views of the people, Copac is always negotiating.
It is sad that we now live under a “negotiating” government instead of one that delivers. Apart from negotiating a constitution whose key aspects were long settled during the outreach, they go to the extent of negotiating about very unfortunate things like security sector “reform.” Where on earth has this ever happened?
