A record 170 exhibitors showcased their wares at the just-ended Masvingo Agricultural Show which has been billed as the highest subscribed show ever in terms of both appeal and exhibitions.
The jump in the number of exhibitors this year represents a 60 percent increase compared to exhibitions at last year’s provincial agricultural premier show.
Not even the absence of cattle and other livestock at this year’s event owing to a freeze on cattle movement could take the thunder off this year’s provincial agricultural show.
Speaking during the official opening of the four-day show, Minister of Sate for Masvingo Provincial Affairs Cde Ezra Chadzamira said the increase in the number of exhibitors signalled potential for economic growth in the province and the nation at large.
This year’s show also saw a record 40 000 fun-lovers paying their way into the annual fair at Masvingo Showgrounds.
The 99th edition of Masvingo Agricultural Show was held under the theme: “Unlocking Investment Potential for Economic Recovery.’’
“I am thrilled that this year’s show has attracted 170 exhibitors from last year’s 105. This shows more than 60 percent increase from last year’s figures,’’ said Cde Chadzamira.
“We also recorded over 40 000 show-goers who paid for the event.’’
He said Government was aware of the prevailing economic challenges and strategies were being worked out to address the crisis.
“Government is aware of the economic battles that people are facing in terms of accessing cash and multiple-pricing systems.
“We remain committed to bringing measures to arrest the cash crisis.
“I want to call upon captains of industry, our retailers, manufactures and our general citizenry to uphold clean, sincere and human principles of trade,” said Cde Chadzamira.
“Your theme is very clear and speaks to His Excellency the President, Commander-In-Chief, Head of State and Government Cde Mnangagwa’s maiden speech to the United Nations General Assembly in New York last Wednesday.
He informed the World leaders that Zimbabwe is open for business and investors should come to the country and do business.”
Guided by this, Cde Chadzamira said Masvingo was inviting investors across all sectors of the economy so that the province’s Gross Domestic Product can be improved.
He said Masvingo was awash with investment opportunities and these were found on the provincial branding website.
“In line with the above, I want our industrial parks in towns and mines to have a new business life.
“The new business activity will create jobs, jobs and jobs for youths,” said Cde Chadzamira.
Masvingo Show Society president Mr Phillip Mauta said the overwhelming response from exhibitors showed that the business community in Masvingo was embracing Government’s ‘open for business’ mantra.
