HISTORY has been made. Zimbabwean referee Brighton Chimene has blown away the competition — earning a landmark appointment to officiate at the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN). The tournament is set to take place from August 2 to 30 in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
In an official confirmation from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Chimene has been named among Africa’s elite match officials for the tournament, making him the first Zimbabwean ever to officiate at CHAN.
This is not just a personal win for Chimene, but a proud moment for Zimbabwean football.
The CHAN tournament, which showcases the best locally-based talent from across the continent, is one of the toughest platforms for referees, demanding laser focus and impeccable decision-making, two traits Chimene has built his reputation on.
Chimene also becomes the first Zimbabwean referee in 17 years to officiate at a major CAF tournament. The last was Kenny Marange, who took charge during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The 17-year silence on the continental stage has finally been broken.
Chimene’s call-up is a beacon of hope for local referees who have long operated in the shadows while players grabbed the spotlight.
With the spotlight now on him, Chimene will represent the country with pride and a sharp whistle, as he rubs shoulders with Africa’s finest on the pitch.
Blow that whistle, Brighton. The whole nation is watching.
