THE local organising committee (LOC) of the sixth edition of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games held in Zimbabwe last December is yet to compile its audit report, eight months after the event. The delay comes amid allegations that the LOC is failing to account for some funds and certain equipment released by the government through the Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture.
AUSC Region 5 general manager Stanley Mutoya confirmed that the audit report had not yet been presented to his office, but refused to speculate on the reasons.
“The report hasn’t been given to us, but I think that has been necessitated by the fact that we’ve been busy with the African Games which are just around the corner. So I can’t speculate now and say the report has been compiled or not until such a time when we’ve gone through the normal procedures,” said Mutoya from the AUSC regional office in Gaborone, Botswana.
Bulawayo provincial administrator Khonzani Ncube chaired the LOC and former Hillside Teachers’ College principal Elkanah Dube was the chief executive officer.
However, sources said some funds and equipment, especially regalia, were allegedly looted.
Some suppliers have also not been paid their dues, believed to be in the region of $3 million.
Treasury released a substantial amount of money to offset some bills, but the majority of suppliers have still not been paid, with some alleging that only those close to the LOC were paid.
