Region 5 games should revive Bulawayo — President

THE Sixth edition of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Games should stimulate the recovery of the City of Bulawayo especially in the hospitality and tourism sector, President Mugabe said yesterday. Officially opening the Second Session of the Eighth Parliament of Zimbabwe in Harare yesterday, President Mugabe who is expected to officially open the Games at Barbourfields Stadium on December 5, said Zimbabwe takes pride in playing host to the Youth Games.

“Madam President and Mr Speaker sir, the country takes pride in having been awarded an opportunity to host the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Games from December 5 to 14. The Games will draw participants from 11 Sadc countries. They should stimulate the recovery of the City of Bulawayo especially in the hospitality and tourism sector,” said President Mugabe who was instrumental in bringing the Games to Bulawayo.

Meanwhile, the Games’ torch which was lit by President Mugabe on September 18 at the State House in Harare, will next week move to Masvingo and Midlands Provinces before being taken to Matabeleland South and then Matabeleland North.

It will then come to the host province, Bulawayo where it is expected to tour the metropolitan province’s five districts until the Games roar to life on December 5.

Participating countries are set to start arriving on December 1.
