BULAWAYO will not experience load shedding during the sixth edition of the African Union Sports Council Region Five Under-20 Games.
There have been fears that power cuts that have now become the order of the day will continue being effected even during the youth sporting extravaganza that will see 15 countries, 10 from the Southern Region and the other five by special invitation fight it out in eight sports disciplines from December 4 to 14.
However, the government has taken the bold decision not to have load shedding during the games.
“A decision has been made not to have load shedding during the games and we will make sure that is implemented, make no mistake about that,” said the Minister of Energy and Power Development, Dzikamai Mavhaire in a brief interview with Chronicle Sport on the sidelines of the official launch of the Games held at a city hotel on Saturday.
Minister Mavhaire assured the Bulawayo public that the government would fulfil its promise of making sure Bulawayo does not become dark during the games.
“We did it during the World Cup when we said no load shedding and certainly we cannot fail to do the same during such an important regional gathering,” said Minister Mavhaire.
He is part of the inter-ministerial taskforce tasked with making sure the Games are held successfully.
Senior Minister of State Simon Khaya Moyo chairs the taskforce.
However, as a fall back measure, organisers have made provisions for high powered generators which will be installed at various venues across the city.
