AFRICAN Union Sports Council Region Five secretary general and chairperson of the 2014 Under-20 Games’ regional organising committee Mvuzo Mbebe arrived in Bulawayo yesterday morning ahead of the draw on Friday. Mbebe, a South African national, joins other members of the regional committee that include the vice chairperson George Jana and Stanley Mutowa who have been in the country since last week.
The chief executive officer of the local organising committee Elkannar Dube, who is also a Highlanders Football Club board member, told Chronicle Sport that Mbebe and his delegation would tour venues today before holding a meeting with them.
“Yes, he is here. We had initially planned to have a tour of venues today (yesterday) but we had to push it to tomorrow (today).
Also arriving are experts with expertise in different fields.
On Wednesday we expect the chef de missions to arrive where they will then check on a few things here and there,” he said.
Dube said the draw date still remains unchanged (Friday) although they were yet to finalise on the venue. According to the head of the local organising committee’s marketing department, Kennedy Ndebele, the draw will be beamed live on national television and Vice President Joice Mujuru is expected to be the guest of honour at the event.
Most of the venues are almost complete with the only worry being the White City Stadium where a tartan track is yet to be erected while planting of the lawn is also yet to commence.
The chief secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet Misheck Sibanda recently expressed concern about White City with the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Andrew Langa also expressing similar sentiments on Friday after a tour of the venues.
The tartan track is said to be still holed up in Durban, South Africa.
