EIGHTEEN athletes were at the weekend selected to represent the country at the Southern African Regional Championships in Port Stream, South Africa, on Saturday.The team will leave on Thursday under the tutelage of NAAZ director for development and recruitment Lisimati Phakamisa from Matabeleland South.

The highlight of the events on Saturday was the men’s 12km race, which was attended by a host of seasoned athletes such as Elijah Mabhunu, Isaac Mpofu, Jonathan Chinyoka, Cuthbert Nyasango, Phathisa Ngwabi and the race winner Munyaradzi Jari.

Jari stole the show as he won the race in 40minutes 36.5seconds. The Air Force of Zimbabwe athlete managed to tackle the course well as most athletes had hard times on the course as it was muddy and slippery due to rains.

The race also saw the return of Tsholotsho based and 2003 Zimbabwe National Youth Games 3,000m gold medallist Brenda Banda.

Men: Munyaradzi Jari (Harare), Elijah Mabhunu (Midlands), Isaac Mpofu (Bulawayo), Wellington Varevi (Matebeleland South), Jonathan Chinyoka  (Matabeleland North)
