ONLINE registration for this year’s Econet Victoria Falls Marathon closed yesterday although the country’s athletics custodians, the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz), were in the dark about the number of people that registered.
Despite the meet being an Association of International Marathon and Distance Races (AIMS)-registered event which must be monitored by experts, Naaz yesterday expressed ignorance about the registered numbers two weeks before the marathon.
“I have no idea about the numbers, maybe if you get in touch with our treasurer (Naaz), Zangure (Salatiel) he might have the information which you want as he is the one dealing with the Victoria Falls guys,” said Naaz first vice president in charge of development Aeneas Nhoro.
Zangure was also in the dark.
“I don’t have the figures, try to get hold of me next week, I might be able to assist then,” said Zangure.
The Econet Victoria Falls Marathon has been dominated by Blanket Mine athlete, Nkosiyazi Sibanda.
The athlete has been bullying his way onto the winners’ podium for the past three years.
Winners of this year’s men and women’s marathon will walk away with $900 each, a marginal increase from last year’s prize of $800.
Runners-up will pocket $750, up from $675 while third place athletes have a guaranteed $600 and fourth placed finishers will pocket $450.
Half marathon winners are set to get $500, up from $450.
