REGISTRATION has started for the third edition of the Liquor Hub 10Km Fun Race and 5km Charity walk to be held in the city in December.
The fun race scheduled for 3 December is bankrolled by Bulawayo businessman Rajesh Modi to the tune of $10 000. The chairman of Bulawayo Athletics Board (BAB) Manuel Mpofu urged participants to register in time.
Mpofu said registration fees for the event are pegged at $5 for seniors and $2 for juniors. The registration fee for the 5km charity walk is set at $2 for every individual who wants to participate in the event.
“Registration has already started at the Liquor Hub Wholesale Centre, along Fife Street and Fourth Avenue, those who want to participate should pick up the forms and register in time to avoid the last minute rush because many athletes are expected to compete this year,” he said.
Mpofu said the top three in the men and women’s senior events will each receive$ 500, $300 and $200 respectively.
The junior men’s and women’s first prize is $150, runners will each get $100 for first place and $60 for runners up. There will be no prizes for the grand master races as the rest of the money will be donated to charity. For wheelchairs, the winner will get $200 and for the runners up the prize money is $150.
The charity organisation that will receive the proceeds from the event will be identified by the main sponsor.
Mpofu is confident that this year’s event will attract a huge horde of athletes.
“If all goes well we are expecting to have a crowd of about 1 000 athletes,” he told Sunday Life.
The youngest athletes that will enter the 2017 event will also be given consolation prizes as a way of encouraging participation of youths and promotion of junior policy.
Mpofu revealed that this year’s event will be special as the BAB will be honouring athletes who performed very well this year.
“As the athletics association we are going to award our athletes in Bulawayo who have excelled in competitions throughout the year for the two best athletes in the men and women’s categories. Eight awards in total will be handed to athletes courtesy of Modi, with whom we have built a lasting relationship,” he said. -@ J_sihwa
