The rehabilitation of Derbyshire Road in Waterfalls, Harare has started, as the Government continues with efforts to upgrade all roads.

It is being rehabilitated under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP) by a local company, Drawcard Construction Services.

In an interview, Drawcard Construction Engineer, Kudakwashe Chikwama, said they expect to complete the process by December.

“We have just started rehabilitation of Derbyshire road which links roads that connects to Mbare the road was full of potholes which were making it difficult for motorists to navigate, and with the speed we are taking we expect the road project to have been completed by December 16,” Engineer Chikwama said.

Waterfalls residents welcomed the work.

“The reconstruction of this road is a noble idea we as residents were the most affected as motorists were shunning this road because of its potholes but now if the road has been rehabilitated, commuter omnibus would come to ferry us as the road will be free from potholes,” said resident Tiding Gomo.

A motorist, Brighton Mudarikire, shared the same sentiments as they applauded the Government with this initiative to rehabilitate the road.

“It has been long overdue before this road has been rehabilitated. The road was in a sorry state, but now with the way it is being constructed we are confident it shall be one of the beautiful roads in the country, said Mudarikire,

Other roads countrywide were currently being reconstructed or rehabilitated with some almost complete as no road will be left behind. The state-of-the-art Mbudzi interchange, which is at the intersection of Simon Mazorodze Road, Chitungwiza Road, and High Glen Road in Harare, is proof that the National Development Strategy 1 is bearing fruit.

The interchange is already taking shape and now enters the most intense phase of construction.

The major road through Ridgeview in Harare, Ganges Road, has also been undergoing surfacing and will reopen soon.

Ganges Road is the old runway for the Belvedere Airport and was reclaimed from the bush as a main road more than half a century ago.

It needed fixing. Ganges Road runs through to Ridgeview and passes near ZESA National Training Centre, Harare Institute of Technology and Belvedere Technical Teachers’ College.

The road has a length of 2,23km.

Another road, St Patrick’s, the main central east-west road through Hatfield that was in a terrible state, has also been completed and opened to traffic in Harare as the Government presses ahead with modernising the country’s road network.
