WORKS to rehabilitate Gwanda- Manama Road have commenced, a development which has brought much needed relief to stakeholders.

Rehabilitation works that will conducted include reconstruction of a 10km stretch in Mawane area which is severely damaged.

A three kilometer stretch will be refilled and resurfaced. A contractor, More Surface Private Limited is on the ground carrying out the works.

Detours have been constructed to ensure undisrupted movement of vehicles while works are carried out.

This follows rigorous efforts by the local leadership to facilitate timeous rehabilitation of the road which has been severely damaged.

The road which is the busiest in Gwanda District is a link to Mlambapeli Border Post, irrigation schemes, Manama Hospital, cattle sales pens. It also links Gwanda to Beitbridge and Kezi.

The road has suffered severe damage over the three years leaving motorists in despair. This damage has been attributed to heavy vehicles that pass through the area and rains. Heavy rains which have been received this year have worsened the situation.

Matabeleland South provincial roads Engineer Mangisi Nkomo said rehabilitation of the Gwanda- Manama Road had been set as one of the priority projects for the year 2026.

He said the target is to have works completed timeously so as to enhance road safety and accessibility for the communities relying on the vital transportation route.

Under the Second Republic, Government is committed to rehabilitating the road network as infrastructural development is key to attaining an upper middle-income economy by 2030.

These efforts form part of the Government’s Vision 2030 goal to become an upper-middle-income society, with a modern and efficient road network central to achieving that target.

Driving robust infrastructure development is a key focus area for Government as improved infrastructure is an enabler for accelerated economic growth.
