THE Nestle sponsored National Association of Primary School Heads (Naph) Bulawayo inter-district track and field athletics competition ended yesterday with Reigate district scooping 25 gold medals at White City Stadium. Reigate collected 25 gold, 12 silver and 10 bronze medals. Nestle Zimbabwe poured in $180,000 under a slogan, “A healthy mind in a healthy body” for the primary schools athletics competitions across the country.
Defending champions going into this year’s meet, Mzilikazi, came second with 24 gold medals.
Khami came third with five gold medals while Mbizo and Bulawayo Central had three and two gold medals respectively.
Baines Primary School pupil Ndumiso Ncube was the star attraction in the Under-13 boys’ category.
The youngster clocked 26 seconds in the 200m and 12.78 seconds in the 100m dash.
Nestle Zimbabwe corporate affairs manager Farai Munetsi said they were committed to ensuring that children grow up eating a balanced diet and engaging in exercise to avoid obesity.
“We launched the programme in 2012 and we have witnessed schools from various clusters and districts demonstrating a lot of enthusiasm.
“Physical education and good nutrition are being encouraged at all levels as the prevalence of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure are on the rise,” said Munetsi.
Naph Bulawayo Metropolitan chairman Njabulo Bango said they are now targeting to do better than previous years in nationals.
“We are starting camp on Monday, we want to do better than last year. With the level of competition exhibited today, I’m very happy and I think we are capable.
“I would like to thank our major sponsor Nestle Zimbabwe for making this event a colourful one,” said Bhango.
