Teams working to rescue five trapped miners at Task Mining Syndicate in Chegutu have recorded a breakthrough, with relatives now optimistic of seeing their loved ones again.
The miners were trapped 15 days ago when a shaft collapsed on September 8.
Mine owner, Mr Temson Musonza, told The Herald yesterday that the rescue teams were now working on removing boulders and earth blocking the entrance.
He said the artisanal miners working as rescuers with guidance from the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development were within range to create an opening.
Mr Admire Gwatidzo, father to Shingai Gwatidzo, a trapped 19-year-old who is a Form 4 student, said the rescuers were working tirelessly to access the trapped miners.
“They have confirmed to us that a huge rock is blocking their way to the other side where the five are and this has resulted in an improved pace of doing work by the mine owners and rescuers,” he said.
Mr Gwatidzo, just like any other relative camping at the site, remains optimistic.
“They are hoping that there might be signs of life. The rescuers hope to pull out the five by tomorrow (today),” he said.
Ms Yeukai Musidi, a sister to the trapped Tariro Dzinorera, said while they remain optimistic, their prolonged stay underground was raising more doubts.
