Relief for expecting mothers in Muzarabani

Minister of State for Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs Cde Monica Mavhunga has commended the Red Cross Society for setting up a piped water scheme at Chiwenga Clinic in Muzarabani District saying it will go a long way in easing water challenges faced by pregnant women.

Cde Mavhunga said expecting mothers were spending a lot of time drawing water from a borehole with low water yield.

She appealed to Government to construct a district hospital in Muzarabani as patients were travelling to St Albert’s Mission Hospital for medical attention.

“Muzarabani is far from the town and I commend Red Cross for coming all the way here to ensure that people have access to clean and safe water. The water pump has a capacity of 30 cubic litres and it will benefit Chiwenga clinic and secondary school, which need about 20 cubic litres combined. The piped water schemes will lessen the burden on women who travel long distances carrying buckets of water on their heads,” said Cde Mavhunga.

Red Cross Society secretary-general Mr Maxwell Phiri said they chipped in to assist the clinic with a piped water scheme after being touched by the plight of pregnant women who took over 30 minutes drawing water for use at the clinic.

“Water challenges were a burden for women and as Red Cross Society we have learnt the need for projects that are relevant to the community. We are not a non-governmental organization but an auxiliary to Government and we promise to build a classroom block at Chiwenga Secondary School,” said Mr Phiri.
