Religion has morphed to become intertwined with Zimbabwe’s cultural norms and is a key facet with which the citizenry, particularly the youth, can leverage and foster discipline and success, the Minister of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Lieutenant General (Rtd) Anselem Sanyatwe, has said.
Minister Sanyatwe said this after seeing off the confirmation of Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga’s son, Michael at St Gerard Catholic Church in Harare yesterday.
Confirmation in the Catholic Church is one of the seven sacraments and is considered a vital step in a person’s spiritual journey.
“It is often seen as the completion of the initiation process, making the individual a full member of the Church,” he said.
The Chiwenga family chose Minister Sanyatwe, a long time acquaintance of VP Chiwenga, as the godfather.
“Religion, and in this case Christianity, is a pillar with which a country’s citizenry, particularly the youth, can foster a firm foundation for a fulfilling life,” said Minister Sanyatwe.
“I am happy to handhold my son on this occasion as he embarks on a new spiritual path and also a path into adulthood and a fulfilling life in which he can make his family proud.
“From a Government perspective, this is what we wish every teenager to undergo.
“Our youth folk are living in a world that is under increased pressure from varying challenges, ranging from drug abuse and a rise in absurd practices.
“Our hope is that every adult hand guiding these youngsters is a hand leading to cultural norms and the raising of citizens we can be proud of and those that can positively impact society and the economy,” he said.
